This is the log of the eighth Warriors’ Meeting held August 8, 1998 at 4:00 p.m. EST.

[Kuromaku's Dojo]

Diffuse light streams in through the ricepaper shoji screens which enclose this large room. Thick cotton-wrapped tatami mats cover the polished pine floor. Wooden weapon racks are set against the walls filled with assorted weapons, both rattan and metal. You also see the Kerl disk, the Kildar disk, a low pine table with some stuff on it, an elegant freestanding bamboo cage, a sliding screen and a heavy mithril-bound hatch.

Also in the room: Lord Gigantuous, Lord Gasteel who is seated, Lord Valicar who is seated, Lord Reife who is seated, Lord Kerl who is seated, Ankhan who is seated, Lord Asglyn who is seated, Lord Kildar who is seated, Lord Gaq who is seated, Lady Lauranathalasa who is seated, Lord Durath who is seated, Lord Morzathis who is kneeling, Lady Titaniia who is seated, GameMaster Lord Kuromaku

Obvious exits: none.

You see Lord Kuromaku Hikoemon the Giantman Warrior.
He appears to be in his 110's, has short, straight black hair, dark eyes, and black skin.
He is in good shape.
He is wearing a hideous ogre mask, a dark shirt, an ancient enruned urnon key, a crafter's apron, a jade-inlaid sheath, some dark trousers, a dark silk satchel, and a blackened mesh belt.

Kuromaku says, "OK, let’s get started. Welcome to our gazillionth meeting. You've mostly all been here, so I'll go over the rules brieflikes. No talking when I am. No talking when other people are, and if you wanna say something, raise yer hand. Keep the squirming down, 'cause it makes Hyoko angry. Hyoko is our official scribe, mainly because he's too polite to say no, and Tiny is our backup scribe when Hyoko finally DOES get his back up. If you need old logs, ask Hyoko or get 'em from Dracoblood's site. Let's begin with some status. The hatch on the ground is for exits. I got tired of puttin' folks back, so there are archways in my cellar. They currently go to Landing Guild and Trace Guild. Until I finish my 20+ portal, I'll manually move the Teras crowd. Should have that later tonight. Further, I am now the official guru of Icemule Trace. Whoopie and hurray. It does NOT mean that I'm giving you guys up. It DOES mean that these weekly meetings are about to become biweekly, so we'll have 'em every other week. Of course, if ya wanna attend on the alternate weeks and talk Trace, go right ahead. I think you guys can understand. OK, list of stuff I'm doin' this week: Finishing the level/rep tweak for the Guild. Putting in a tweak in WTR Juggling. I got tired of seeing folks juggle glaes clubs. And working on seeing if I can get WTR SPERF to work while in hiding. Additionally, I MIGHT get to tweaking the sheathing tricks so that they work with brawling weapons. OK, that's fer you guys alone. Now, public: I've been assigned to do REPAIR. I will NOT answer any questions about it. I cannot, and will not. It is my responsibility to make it, and make it I shall. We are not close to it. I was assigned to the task on Wednesday. I have no timeframes. I am also currently speccing out the possibility of people choosing residency. That is, you are a resident of Trace, or Landing, or Teras, or RR, or Pinefar, or the Kobold Village, or wherever. Doing so may allow for better RP opportunities for players such as the constable smiling at you if you're a resident or frowning at you if you aren't, or providing discounts in local shops, or even having areas that are for residents of the town only. Parks, etc. It's only a concept at this stage, but I'm pretty excited about it. The rest of the stuff I'm working on is hush-hush. OK, any questions about that stuff?"

Titaniia says, "Just a comment. I think it would be great for setting up merchants in "town only" areas."

Kuromaku says, "Already noted."

Asglyn asks, "How would that work? Based on the location of your locker?"

Kuromaku says, "No. I'm currently experimenting with ways that it might work, but it definitely won't be locker-based."

Asglyn says, "Was wondering since ye might have people move on a moment’s notice for just that kind of merchant event."

Kuromaku says, "I'm aware of that possibility."

Kerl asks, "Could you give a brief explaination of the level/rep tweak please?"

Kuromaku says, "Sure. If you're over 80th level, you will gain reps for training on critters 20 years younger than you or less. Currently, you only gain reps for critters 10 years younger than you."

Lauranathalasa asks, "So a Level 79 warrior could learn from 69 and up, and level 80 can learn from 60 and up?"

Kuromaku says, "That's right."

Kildar says, "Ye talked about tweaking the WTR sheathings to include brawling weapons. What about different weapon containers, i.e., harnesses? "

Kuromaku says, "That won't happen, currently. It's because of what defines a sheath, in the skill's eyes."

Kildar asks, "Will that be changed, ever?"

Kuromaku says, "I don't really know. Unlikely."

Kerl asks, "I realize I'm getting a bit off subject here, but is it possible the WTRICK DRAW could be made location-specific?"

Kuromaku says, "Probably, but it would defeat the purpose. The skill draws the weapon you have the most skill in from any open container."

Kerl says, "The drawback of it is that you have no control over which weapon you draw."

Kuromaku says, "Do what I do. I wear a sheath and a scabbard and close the one I DON'T want to draw from. OK. Topics: I don't have any. So, I thought we might discuss what makes an area suitable for warriors and not for casters, so I could make one. Now, the obvious answer is welllll...no magic. Big ol' mana sink sucks all the mana from everything. No spells work, no magic works. Yer all in trouble. Yeah, that's a chuckle until someone dies or gets badly wounded, and I fog in and.... Oh, no I don't. OK. I RUN in, and LK.... No, I don't."

Titaniia says, "I've thought about that for some time, and I think I have an answer. The area could be a mountain path, along side a rushing stream. You die, you fall into the stream and are swept down the mountain to the foggable entrance."

Kuromaku says, "Uh-uh. That's called no-risk hunting."

Titaniia says, "No, it’s not. You're still dead same as before."

Asglyn asks, "Instead of a no-magic area, how about magic-supressed?"

Kuromaku asks, "Heavy failure? That sort of thing?"

Asglyn says, "Possible. Could allow someone to fog in, but require return out or a good dragger."

Lauranathalasa says, "Allow some magical devices to work such as LK and the rezzing dragon ale brew."

Kuromaku says, "Getting closer. Maybe."

Hyoko asks, "Perhaps an area, say, crystal caverns, where offensive magics are reflected back at the caster?"

Kuromaku says, "Was thinking about creatures that ate magic."

Lauranathalasa says, "Have a node in this area that magic can be casted in. A safe zone. Dead folk can be dragged into it."

Kuromaku says, "Nope. No better. You plant an empath and a cleric there. Woo."

Ankhan says, "Okay, here's the thing. Okay, I have an idea for spiritual kinds of things affecting spirit magic. In a very dark, dead area full of evil spirits, maybe when a person tries to cast a spirit spell they leave their soul open, and an evil spirit jumps in and gets 'em! ARGH! Or something like that. You get my drift."

Kuromaku says, "And I hope it's not catching."

Kerl says, "Not to drag everyone down or anything, but as a person who almost always group hunts, and almost always with a magic-user, I fail to see the draw of exclusive areas. In fact, I think they are a step in the wrong direction. Areas where all are challenged are what I'm looking for."

Kuromaku applauds.

Kuromaku exclaims, "Kerl, ladies and gentlemen! Know what? I agree. Force a wizard to swing, or a ranger, or a cleric, or a bard. Funny, there are creatures that can't be hit physically. Why not critters that can't be hit magically?"

Kerl says, "So fix them instead of turning it around."

Kuromaku says, "They aren't going to."

Kerl says, "Then mix them together."

Kuromaku exclaims, "Kill everyone!"

Kerl says, "Now that sounds entertaining."

Kuromaku exclaims, "Oh, I agree!"

Valicar says, "If you wish to have a more arms-user-type area, maneuver attacks, for one, will scare most casters off. Not too many wagglers in roa'ters for example. Magic-dead zone as discussed would work. They would bring in some of the "Physical" world that Berr discused earlier in these forums. Routes to the hunting area requiring great climbing and swimming skills that can only be accessable by those means have proven OK. DRAG-outs intstead of fog-outs. The weaknesses of Elanthia magic are vast if you dig enough. But as Kerl said we should be pushing towards bringing folks together instead of forging ourselves into solo hunters."

Titaniia says, "Firstly, not everyone has magic-using friends who are happy to invite them on hunts constantly, especially when they have nothing to offer in return. Secondly, I fail to see why a squares’ hunting ground should provide greater percentage of decay then a normal one. An' thirdly, I hate when magik critters get mixed in with normal, like harbs and kings. It just means more dead fiters."

Kuromaku says, "1: Wear more deodorant. 2: Because we kill more. 3:So do I. OK, seriously. Very few casters want to hunt with arms users. We can't help that. They have this THING that says, ‘Hey. Fighters chop and chop and chop. I can bzzt. Dead. Why do I need them?’ Hopefully, that will change, but until it does..."

Kildar says, "Okay, back to what we started to talk about. I like the idea of making the criters eat offensive magic. Keeping the soloist and the groups whole. It’s going to be too hard to supress magic or to take it away as a whole. Tweaking the idea of eating magic or fumbles more often may be very good. Adding additional criter defense against spells may be another option."

Valicar asks, "Point one of Titaniia's words speak of the crux of "what can we possibly offer the realms". Repair and Forging I think will solve a great deal of thism but those are skills that will mainly be used in safe environs. How about in the field, in combat? The proposed DEFEND would help, but the opportunities for abuse are very, very heavy. Mayhaps DEFEND should only be usable in certain situations, i.e., massive swarms, defending someone who is down or stunned or bound, etc.? Any ideas from anyone to give the GMs a good feeling about the verb?"

Gaq grows indistinct. Slowly it dawns on you that he isn't there anymore.

Kuromaku says, "Well, I'll tell ya. The team LIKES Defend. It's just too abusable, so I'm working on how to make it work."

Valicar says, "As it stands now, my job in a group is to deliver the knockout blow, but that can be done as easy as any good ambusher. Would be nice to offer more."

Hyoko says, "Well, you've reviewed a few creature-specific suggestions I've given you that I hope will help. Seems to me that, if you want an area where everyone will fight physically, the creatures should have low AS's, low DS's, high TD's, and just SCADS of hit points. And be uncrittable."

Kuromaku grins.

whack whack whack whack whack...TIMBER!

Kerl grows indistinct. Slowly it dawns on you that he isn't there anymore.

Lauranathalasa says, "If someone is defending they can’t be attacking, and, as far as offering things to casters, I always offer my mana, my disarm and tackle abilities. But a point I want to note. I never hunt in an area unsuitable, i.e., if I dont have warding I dont go anywhere near warding critters. We need to realize our capabilities and hunt within them. Some areas it’s a must to hunt in a group, and some areas if you do yer toast."

Kuromaku says, "OK. Let's try it. Everybody stand, join Hyoko. Weapons and shields, folks. No swinging until I say."

Kuromaku points at a big ol' grouphuntin' critter.

You are not quite sure what to make of the grouphuntin' critter, as you have never seen anything that looks quite like it. Stopping a moment, you try to commit this creature to memory so that you can tell tales of it to your fellow adventurers back in the safety of the local tavern.

Kuromaku says, "OK, when I say go, go to. :)"

Kuromaku says, "Go."

Kildar searches a big ol' grouphuntin' critter.

Kildar gathers the remaining coins.

A big ol' grouphuntin' critter quickly decomposes before your eyes.

Kuromaku asks, "Somethin' like that? OK, siddown an' hush. That critter had 10,000 points. Curiously, only 5 times what a real 'thag has. On the other hand, I reduced its AS and DS by two-thirds. Let's face it. You were a buncha dead fiters."

Hyoko asks, "Only because of the maneuver attack, though. Not the direct attacks, yes?"

Kuromaku says, "Well, Hyoko, you wanna HIT sorcerers and wizards or not?"

Hyoko says, "I just want to use up their mana."

Reife says, "If I may say so, the lowered AS was a worse thing than havin it higher from the shards. Make ‘em swing like demons."

Durath raises his hand.

Durath says, "I am sure we would have had better results if we were all old enough to handle the creature."

Kuromaku says, "You were. Ankhan hit it with ease. You would have done better if you were casters. It's DS was 200. AS not much higher."

Gigantuous says, "The shards are what really killed us."

Kuromaku nods to Gigantuous.

Hyoko asks, "Why better as casters? Would we not have run out of mana?"

Lauranathalasa says, "If its AS was higher, they would get knocked in the other room. I seen it. Them clubs are nasty."

Kuromaku says, "They'd be flat. OK, so we kinda agree with Hyoko. Kinda. Yeah, you won the battle. How many of ya died? 4, 2 on the way for sure. Outta 12. That's pretty good work fer one critter. OKm let's wrap this up some. I think we need to have an area where warriors can hunt and feel necessary. I don't know how that works, exactly. I'm not downplaying the need or desire to have a team, but I DO want an area where arms-users can go, and be effective if not MORE effective than casters. Ya don't HAVE to go there, but you should have the choice."

Reife asks, "Any way to make offensive spells ineffective in an area?"

Kuromaku says, "Not as such, but I can make critters not affected by 'em."

Titaniia asks, "Since we've decided warcries are magik, and we want a way to be "useful" to casters, why not allow warcries to up CS for the short span of time they work as well as AS? Just an idea. I'd like to offer something to a hunt."

Kuromaku says, "Let's not. Hard enough balancing critters without adding a way to add to the CS of a caster."

Valicar says, "I think we shouldn’t hinder the casters use of magic in any area. Make it dangerous for them is all."

Kuromaku says, "I like the idea of a magicless area."

Valicar asks, "Like adverse spell effects? Random spell generation?"

Kuromaku says, "Or odd effects."

Lauranathalasa asks, "When were warcries decided to be magic? And if they are, let proper warding effect them, not spirit or elemental magic. So we can offer our voices. Is this going anywhere, my Lord?"

Kuromaku says, "They are. They use the warding system. This isn't a surprise. They aren't meant to be."

Reife asks, "Any word on makin offensive warcries work better?"

Kuromaku says, "No. No adjustments like that will be made until the Rogue's Guild is complete. I've said it a thousand times."

Ankhan asks, "When you speak of an area with odd effects, do you mean like spontaneous combustion and stuff? Maybe people turning to stone or something?"

Kuromaku says, "Backfiring, misfiring, targets shifting. Wrong spells being cast. Double mana costs. "

Reife says, "Random mana costs would be more fun than double."

Kuromaku says, "It would. Perhaps a percentage of mana. OK, tonight's gonna be a short meeting. I have some work I MUST get done."
